Chapter 277 — Really Not Dead

The Blossom Guardian

"Oh, okay..." Song Lingshan was a little bewildered, but since Yang Huaijun had said so, she was ready to carry out his words to the letter.

She told the marine police to pull back for now, borrowed a speedboat together with Liu Wangli's men, and began searching along the coastline.

"Captain Song, searching here... the bodies could not have drifted over this fast, could they..." Liu Wangli asked, puzzled.

"Chief Yang ordered it. Just keep your eyes wide open!" Song Lingshan offered no further explanation, because she herself did not quite understand Yang Huaijun's suggestion. Yet Yang Huaijun was the man she admired most in the bureau, and his instructions she would carry out without compromise.

The moment Liu Wangli heard it was an order from his old captain, now Deputy Chief Yang, he shut his mouth at once! Like Song Lingshan, his admiration for Yang Huaijun was total. If Yang Huaijun told them to do this, he must have his reasons.

Shen Yushu sat bored on the beach playing with sand, piling it into a little fort and then digging a trap beside it, utterly delighted with her game.

Wei Zhao looked at Shen Yushu, so full of childlike fun, and smiled. At a time like this, only Shen Yushu could still be in the mood to play with sand.

Glancing at the phone lying on the sand, Wei Zhao picked it up, fitted the battery back in, and pressed the power button. Sure enough, the phone turned on. It seemed what that friend had said held some truth after all.

Wei Zhao dialed Yang Huaijun's number directly, but unfortunately the other end reported the phone was switched off. After a moment's hesitation, he dialed Song Lingshan's number.

At the ring, Song Lingshan took out her phone. She had assumed it would be Chief Chen calling, but when she saw the name shown on the caller display, she could not help widening her eyes!

Was she seeing a ghost? The caller ID actually read Wei Zhao's name! Had he not drowned?

Liu Wangli was taken aback, unable to understand why Song Lingshan just stared at the phone without answering it. "Captain Song, what is wrong with you..."

"Oh, it is nothing..." Song Lingshan came to herself and quickly answered the call. She was a staunch materialist who never believed in ghosts or spirits at all. "Hello? Wei Zhao?"

Wei Zhao had waited impatiently for what felt like an age, cursing inwardly at what this tigress was doing not to answer. Who knew how much longer his own phone could hold out!

"Song Lingshan, get someone to check right now, trace my phone signal, then tell Uncle Qing to come pick me up! No more talk now, we will speak when I am back!" With that, Wei Zhao hung up. He did not know Song Lingshan was already out searching for him, and had expected her to pepper him with questions. But he hardly dared use the phone in his hand any longer. Who knew whether saying too much might make it shut itself off.

Wei Zhao's phone did have GPS locating software in it, but he could not guarantee the phone would not freeze once he called it up. With a phone that had been in the water, who knew what it would do next.

"Not dead?" Song Lingshan stared at her phone in amazement, hardly daring to believe it! Yet Wei Zhao had well and truly called, and had even asked her to check his position. She could be certain now that Wei Zhao must have escaped danger, though she still did not know where he was.

"What do you mean, not dead?" Liu Wangli was puzzled. What was Captain Song talking about?

"Liu Wangli, call the technical section and have them locate 152XXXX1234 at once, then report back to me!" Song Lingshan said to Liu Wangli.

"Yes!" Although Liu Wangli had gotten no answer from Song Lingshan, that was a matter of no importance. With orders from her, he naturally dared not delay and moved to carry them out at once.

Very soon the coordinates of Wei Zhao's phone signal were fed back to Song Lingshan. She entered the coordinates into the speedboat's GPS, and discovered, with a mix of surprise and inevitability, that the coordinates where Wei Zhao was located lay on a stretch of coastline just two kilometers behind her!

Wei Zhao really was on the coastline. Yang Huaijun had actually called it! Song Lingshan finally understood what Yang Huaijun had meant, for he had been sure all along that Wei Zhao would not die, and would certainly swim ashore.

Song Lingshan frowned slightly. It seemed this kid Wei Zhao really did have some ability! Little as she liked to admit it, admit it she must! Wei Zhao seemed to be just a... little bit stronger than she was! Of course, when it came to fighting skill, she was not about to concede defeat.

Having obtained Wei Zhao's coordinates, Song Lingshan could not wait to call Wei Zhao back. She wanted to make sure whether Shen Yushu was all right.

However, after Wei Zhao's phone rang twice, it was inexplicably cut off. When Song Lingshan called again, all she heard from the other end was the powered-off tone.

Song Lingshan felt helpless and a little annoyed. He would not even answer now? Still, she knew his phone was probably out of power. Otherwise Wei Zhao would not have called in such a frantic rush, only to blurt out that one vague instruction before hanging up. Now that he was out of danger, he should have had time to talk.

Song Lingshan had guessed more or less correctly, except the phone was not out of power but completely broken. Just as Wei Zhao tried to answer, he found the phone had frozen and would not even switch off. He could only pull the battery, but when he put it back in, it would no longer turn on.

Who knew whether that tigress Song Lingshan would have the sense to trace his position? Wei Zhao shook his head with a bitter smile, hoping the tigress had at least that much brains.

The reason Wei Zhao had not called Uncle Qing, but had chosen Yang Huaijun and Song Lingshan first, was that he feared his phone would not last much longer. If he called Uncle Qing, Uncle Qing would still have to contact the police before they could lock onto the phone signal. After going around in such a circle, Wei Zhao could not be sure his phone would survive that long, so calling Song Lingshan directly was simpler.

When Wei Zhao saw a motorboat approaching in the distance, he knew Song Lingshan was not so hopeless after all.

"Xiao Shu, someone has come to fetch us. We can go home now." Wei Zhao called out to Shen Yushu, who was still playing with the sand.

In fact, Wei Zhao had not worried at all. Even if the phone broke, it would only mean being found a little later. Once Yang Huaijun learned that he and Shen Yushu had fallen into the sea together, he would surely judge that he was not dead.

"Oh, Arrow Brand, I finally managed to build a castle out of sand!" Shen Yushu was rather reluctant to leave.

"Heh, in a little while I will borrow someone else's phone and take a picture of it, to keep as a souvenir for you." Wei Zhao said with a smile.

"All right." Shen Yushu stood up and brushed the sand from her clothes. In the heat, the clothes soaked with seawater had long since dried, only they left a sticky feeling that was uncomfortable.
