Chapter 475 — Let Me Tune You Up
Feng Xiaoxiao sat smugly in the driver's seat, carrying Kang Xiaobo and Xiaofen toward the shantytown. She meant to drop Xiaofen off first, and it just so happened that along the way she could pump Kang Xiaobo for information about Wei Zhao... "Xiaobo, tell me more about Wei Zhao, won't you?" Feng Xiaoxiao asked as she drove. Liu Wangli jumped down from the police car and stared in some astonishment at the three dead and one wounded on the ground, and at the two victims who had been rescued, then gave Qiu Lingshan a thumbs-up: "Captain Song, you're really something, aren't you — finding the organ-trafficking ring's den just like that?" "This..." Qiu Lingshan blushed at once at Liu Wangli's praise, coughed twice, and said: "From my preliminary observation and judgment, this is not the gang's main lair. It can only be counted as a transfer point, where the beggars, vagrants and cripples they seize are sent and held until the next stage of their criminal operation." "That's still impressive! Our whole team searched the city without a wink of sleep and turned up nothing, and Captain Song really does have a trick or two up her sleeve!" said another veteran captain on the force, full of admiration.
Back when Qiu Lingshan had first taken up the post of detachment chief of the city's criminal police, these captains under her had not been at all convinced. But as she cracked one major case after another, and with the first-place skills she had shown at the police combat tournament, they had all come to be thoroughly won over and full of admiration for her.
Qiu Lingshan blushed still deeper... Thinking of how she had just played the coquette with Wei Zhao and gotten such vital intelligence in return, she felt thoroughly ashamed. Her credit had come to her that way, and it left her with the feeling of having cheated someone... Facing everyone's praise, she could hardly explain herself, and could only order Liu Wangli: "Liu Wangli, take these two victims home first. The rest of you, send the criminal suspects to the hospital..."
Watching her colleagues hustle about, Qiu Lingshan sighed. Could her life be reckoned something of a failure? Now she no longer leaned on Yang Huaijun's help, only on Wei Zhao's... Then again, on second thought, this was her own ability too! Other people did not even know Wei Zhao; only she could get Wei Zhao to lend a hand. Whatever the process, the result was the same, and that was enough... As for the "brain-dead girl" and such she had said while acting sweet and soft with Wei Zhao, she could simply treat it as a nickname, a joke between good friends, and need not agonize over it. After all, plenty of colleagues around her had nicknames, and those nicknames were not necessarily flattering — "Wild Bull," "Gundam," and the like — and this appellation of hers was aimed at Wei Zhao alone... Though Qiu Lingshan knew it was nothing but self-consolation, it did make her feel a good deal better... Wei Zhao arrived at Guan Xuemin's home. Lai Pangzi was sitting on the sofa at that moment, excitedly saying something to Guan Xuemin, but Guan Xuemin did not interject, only smiling and nodding.
No doubt Guan Xuemin knew he had no head for business, and so he merely listened to Lai Pangzi's views without interfering. After all, every trade has its own mountain; being renowned in the medical world did not mean he was proficient in anything else, and to go poking his nose in would have seemed rather distasteful. "Boss, you're here!" Seeing Wei Zhao come in, Lai Pangzi sprang up from the sofa in excitement. "You're quite nimble for a man your size!" Wei Zhao was rather puzzled. Lai Pangzi was like a spring fitted to his backside, popping up with a whoosh. Had it not been for that massive bulk it would have been nothing, but the point was that such a massive bulk could still be so nimble, and that was rather rare. "Heh heh, I've actually been exercising all along!" Lai Pangzi said. "But my genes were bad from birth — I put on weight even drinking cold water. I've been working at losing weight all along, but I just can't shed it!" "Oh, a genetic problem. When I have time, I'll tune you up." Wei Zhao said mildly. "Great... gah?" Lai Pangzi gave a sudden violent start, and with a leap stared at Wei Zhao in disbelief: "Boss, you're saying genes can be tuned too?" "They can." Wei Zhao nodded. "But you're plump, and I find you quite pleasing to the eye." "Then never mind the tuning — this is just fine!" The moment Lai Pangzi heard that Wei Zhao found him pleasing, he changed his mind. "A little thinner would be better." Wei Zhao smiled. "Once my company is on track, if I have the time, I'll give you some acupuncture."
In truth, giving Lai Pangzi acupuncture was no trouble at all; it could be done at any time, even while talking. The real problem was that Wei Zhao did not yet quite trust Lai Pangzi, had not taken him as a true confidant, and so was in no hurry to grant him favors; he would observe him for a while first. "All right, boss, you're really too good to your little brother! Boo hoo hoo..." Lai Pangzi was so moved that he started crying again. "..." Wei Zhao truly had nothing left to say. The crying habit, it seemed, could not be changed; this he could not cure — it was a matter of personality. "Hey, boss, don't be angry. When I get excited, I'm moved to tears. All right, all right, I'll stop crying!" Lai Pangzi suddenly remembered that Wei Zhao had told him not to cry, and hurriedly hit the brakes.
Wei Zhao waved a hand. Where Lai Pangzi was concerned, he could only take it in stride; being with Lai Pangzi meant enduring his flash floods at any moment, and after a long enough time, one gradually went numb to it.
