Chapter 702 — The Eldest Miss's Inner World
"We absolutely have to have a big feast today to celebrate!" Shen Yushu was plainly overjoyed. "Three wonderful things happened today. First, we have to celebrate Sister Yaoyao getting poisoned and falling into a coma..."
"Xiaoshu! What did you say?" Gu Mengyao was so furious she nearly lost her footing and fell. Celebrate her being poisoned? Was something wrong with this Xiaoshu? Gloating over her misfortune?
"Oh, Sister Yaoyao, don't be angry, I wasn't finished!" Cut off by Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu waved her hand with a wounded air. "What I meant was, we celebrate that after Sister Yaoyao was poisoned and fell into a coma, she escaped death in a great calamity, and great fortune must follow..."
"..." Gu Mengyao's face flushed faintly. It seemed she had misjudged Xiaoshu. Even so, she shot her a glare. "Couldn't you have said it clearly?"
"I did say it. I got interrupted." Shen Yushu said in a small voice.
"You're still talking?" Gu Mengyao made as if to tear Shen Yushu's mouth off.
"Oh... no, don't! Being a little wife is such misery, I won't stand for it..." Shen Yushu shrieked.
"Then don't be any little wife!" Gu Mengyao was only trying to frighten her; she had no real intention of tearing her mouth off. But she hadn't counted on Shen Yushu spouting nonsense again.
"Then I'll go on being one anyway." Shen Yushu thought it over and said.
"Suit yourself." Gu Mengyao rolled her eyes, at a loss for anything better to say.
"Then I'll go on. That's the first thing! The second thing is, we should celebrate that An Jianwen had a kidney cut out, so he can never come pestering Sister Yaoyao again!" Shen Yushu said.
When Gu Mengyao was small, she and An Jianwen had gotten along rather well. Though they were no longer on such good terms now, she still felt some sympathy over his losing a kidney. To speak of celebrating was going too far, so Gu Mengyao gave no support to Xiaoshu's suggestion.
"The third thing is that Song the Fox was humiliated. I'm so happy!" Shen Yushu cried excitedly. "So we absolutely must go celebrate."
Gu Mengyao nodded. Her escaping death in a great calamity was indeed something worth rejoicing over. She glanced at Wei Zhao and said coolly, "Are you free?"
Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. Why was the eldest miss speaking to him in that tone? It wasn't like her at all. In the past she would simply order him to take them out to eat, never asking whether he had the time.
Gu Mengyao's manner rather embarrassed Wei Zhao. He had meant to go find Tang Yun once they had finished seeing An Jianwen, but now it seemed he could only accompany the eldest miss to dinner.
"I was supposed to go shopping with Tang Yun, but I can cancel." Wei Zhao said.
"Then invite her along." Gu Mengyao hesitated, then said.
"Huh?" Wei Zhao froze on the spot, staring at Gu Mengyao in disbelief. Weren't the eldest miss and Tang Yun never on very friendly terms? Why would she want to bring Tang Yun along to dinner today? What did that mean?
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Gu Mengyao frowned. Wei Zhao's gaze made her feel guilty. In truth she loathed that feeling. Ever since Wei Zhao had seen her body, and she had then embarrassingly wet herself all over him, Gu Mengyao instinctively felt flustered and shy in his presence, and that proud, overbearing manner of hers was gone for good.
She was the eldest miss, his employer—how could she feel flustered before him? So Gu Mengyao did her utmost to make her tone and bearing seem cold, the better to mask the unease in her heart.
"You want to treat her to a meal?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Oh, Sister Yaoyao is finally going to negotiate with Tang Yun. Wonderful!" Shen Yushu had no idea what Gu Mengyao was thinking; she simply cheered according to her own reading of things.
"Negotiate?" Wei Zhao glanced at Shen Yushu. Was the eldest miss about to lay her cards on the table with Tang Yun? Thinking of the scene at lunch, Wei Zhao felt a headache coming on. On one side was his employer, on the other his girlfriend, and the eldest miss was plainly a proud person—face was something she had to have.
"Xiaoshu, what nonsense are you spouting? What negotiation?" Gu Mengyao glared at her. "I only want to thank her!"
In fact, that really was what Gu Mengyao had in mind. In the hospital, she had overheard Tang Yun's phone call to Wei Zhao, and in that instant she felt Tang Yun was actually a very good girl, while she herself had always appeared before her as a "rival in love"! And when her life was in danger, Tang Yun had not gloated and wished her dead; instead she had sent Wei Zhao to save her. That moved Gu Mengyao deeply—truly deeply!
The eldest miss had never lacked money growing up, but she had lacked genuine affection. Though Gu Pengzhan gave her plenty of fatherly love, in the end he was simply too busy; however much he loved Gu Mengyao, the time he could spend with her was limited.
All along, the eldest miss and Xiaoshu had only each other to depend on, and that had made the eldest miss cold and aloof through and through. She would treat others well because she was kind at heart, though she never said so aloud.
When Wei Zhao first arrived, the eldest miss was instinctively wary of outsiders, because she did not understand him or know what sort of person he was. Given Gu Mengyao's somewhat closed-off nature, accepting Wei Zhao living in the villa was already the limit.
But as time went on and they spent more time together, Gu Mengyao came to see that Wei Zhao truly treated her very, very well—so well it was almost unbelievable! He would take risks for her, even accompany her as a hostage! That kindness, Gu Mengyao kept deep in her heart.
But her nature made it impossible for her to voice so many words of thanks.
At home, Wei Zhao often cooked for her and Xiaoshu, looking after their daily lives like an elder brother, which made Gu Mengyao feel warm and, at the same time, thoroughly content. Never in her life had anyone treated her so well!
Lacking a mother's love, Gu Mengyao treasured this feeling all the more. However well Gu Pengzhan treated her, he could never cook for her every day, could never look after her in every little thing! Even if Uncle Qing came every day to deliver meals, those were brought back from a grand hotel—how could they compare with food cooked with one's own hands?
So, as Gu Mengyao gradually accepted Wei Zhao's presence, she also developed a dependence on him that she hardly noticed, as if Wei Zhao were omnipotent—no matter what problem she brought to him, he could easily resolve it!
Whether it was running into bad people, or Xiaoshu getting stuck in the iron fence, or treasure hunting in the yard—and he could even find her and Xiaoshu the very moment they were kidnapped! Wei Zhao was like Doraemon, there the instant he was called.
