Chapter 871 — You Can See Through Things?
"All right, I'm not talking to you anymore. I've said too much—if Sister Yaoyao finds out, I'll die a horrible death. Bye-bye." Without giving Tang Yun a chance to speak, Shen Yushu hung up, then doubled over with laughter.
"?" Before Tang Yun could get to the bottom of anything, Shen Yushu had hung up, which left her feeling rather unsettled. Had Wei Zhao really gone off to take a shower with Gu Mengyao? Tang Yun had always felt that the ties between Wei Zhao and Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu were not so simple as employer and employee. Perhaps nothing was going on as yet, but at this rate, sooner or later something was bound to happen.
But Tang Yun did not want to think about it; she was even rather optimistic, telling herself that if Wei Zhao really did have something going on with Gu Mengyao, then so long as she herself did not know, it was fine not to know. She did not know what sort of mentality this was—was it self-abasement, or was she simply too afraid of losing Wei Zhao?
Feng Xiaoxiao's words had been a lie, but they had sounded a warning bell in Tang Yun's heart all the same. Loving someone needs no reason, and there is no rich or poor, no noble or lowly in love—yet the ideal and reality are always at odds. Frankly speaking, even Tang Yun herself felt that Gu Mengyao or Guan Xin might be Wei Zhao's better match...
And she herself—had she not simply ended up with Wei Zhao through a twist of fate? She could help him with nothing. Whatever he did, she was forever a bystander, and she even dragged him down. Once that feeling took shape, it would take root and sprout, making Tang Yun more and more anxious over every gain and loss.
She did not want to question Wei Zhao about anything, nor did she dare to ask. Though Shen Yushu's words were most likely false, sometimes, knowing full well that something is false still makes a person fret and fume...
Tang Yun picked up her phone. After hesitating for a long, long time, she dialed a number from the contacts list.
"Beep—beep—beep—beep—" The call connected, and it rang many times, but no one answered.
Tang Yun quietly pressed the end-call button, set the phone aside, and flopped down onto the bed. Hugging a pillow to her chest, she stared at the wall, dazed and blank...
After a while, Tang Yun's phone suddenly rang—the chime of an incoming text message.
Tang Yun had been sitting there in a daze, and the message startled her. She picked up the phone and glanced at it—it was actually a text from Gu Mengyao.
"I was in the shower just now. Did you need something?"
Tang Yun's heart gave a sudden lurch. So Gu Mengyao really had been in the shower? At that moment Tang Yun felt as though her heart had shattered, and it hurt.
But soon Tang Yun thought again: if Gu Mengyao really had been showering together with Wei Zhao just now, why would she tell her? Would it not have been better to hide it? Only, Tang Yun could not see Gu Mengyao's expression, and she did not know whether this text was meant as a show of defiance.
The tone of the text was very flat, no emotion to be read in it—that was the young lady's usual style.
Tang Yun wanted to call and confirm, but she did not dare. There was a sliver of hope and a knot of unease in her heart; she was afraid that if she called, her guess would turn into reality... yet if she did not call, she could not rest easy.
After hesitating for a long while, Tang Yun let out a somewhat gloomy sigh, turned off the phone and put it aside, and buried her head under the blanket. Without her knowing how, the tears came falling...
Gu Mengyao had sent Tang Yun a text, and after a long while with no reply, she found it rather strange, so she gave Tang Yun a call. After all, the relationship among the three of them was still fairly harmonious.
Hearing the message that the phone was turned off, Gu Mengyao shook her head. Maybe Tang Yun's phone had run out of battery, or maybe she had simply dialed wrong. She did not think much of it, set the phone aside, and began drying her hair with a bath towel...
The night passed without incident. Only the next morning did Wei Zhao discover that he had left his phone in the living room the night before. Seeing no missed-call notice on it, he did not think anything of it, and went off to make breakfast for the young lady and Shen Yushu.
As always, Uncle Qing came to pick up the young lady and Shen Yushu for school, while Wei Zhao drove Shen Yushu's Beetle to the hospital to pick up Tang Yun.
Tang Yun stood at the hospital entrance, her heart in turmoil. She did not know whether Wei Zhao would still come for her as usual, and she did not know whether she would be unable to resist asking him about yesterday. So that whole morning, Tang Yun had not even eaten breakfast; she had spent it all in anxiety.
But the moment Tang Yun saw Wei Zhao, all her unhappiness seemed to vanish. Seeing the smile on Wei Zhao's face, Tang Yun smiled too.
He still loved her. Then why should she not trust him? Why must she keep agonizing over things that might happen and were bound to happen? Tang Yun shook her head, picked up her schoolbag, and ran quickly toward Wei Zhao.
"Why are your eyes red? Did you not sleep well last night?" Wei Zhao opened the car door for Tang Yun and looked at her with some puzzlement. Wei Zhao was a part-time doctor, and rather good at observing such things.
"Mm... I was swatting mosquitoes in the middle of the night..." Tang Yun told a lie. She could hardly tell Wei Zhao that she had cried until midnight, could she? That would be too humiliating.
"Heh..." Though Wei Zhao thought Tang Yun was lying to him, since she was unwilling to say, he did not press: "What do you want to eat?"
"Huh?" Tang Yun was startled by his question: "What do you mean, what to eat?"
"Breakfast. You are not eating?" Wei Zhao asked with a smile.
"I ate..." Tang Yun wanted to say she had already eaten, but under Wei Zhao's half-smiling gaze she lowered her eyes again and asked, puzzled: "How did you know I have not eaten breakfast?"
Since Wei Zhao said so, he must have his reasons, so Tang Yun did not deny it. Ordinarily Wei Zhao would never ask her such a question; after picking her up, they would just head straight to school.
"I am a doctor. I can see right through your body," Wei Zhao said.
"Huh? You can see through things?" Tang Yun looked at Wei Zhao's expression, and her face reddened at once as she blurted out the question.
"No, that I cannot do." Wei Zhao shook his head: "I was merely making an analogy. You have not eaten anything—it shows in your complexion. This is the observation in the four diagnostic methods of Chinese medicine: observation, auscultation, interrogation, and pulse-taking..."
"Oh..." Tang Yun had thought Wei Zhao could see through things, which had given her quite a fright. Though sooner or later she would let him see, if someone really could see through her, it would feel very strange.
"Let's go. Let's get something to eat first." Wei Zhao started the car and began looking along the street for a breakfast shop.
"Maybe we should not? We will be late for school..." Tang Yun said with some worry.
"With Wang Zhifeng backing us up, what are you afraid of?" Wei Zhao said with a laugh.
