Chapter 982 — A Chance Encounter on the Road

The Blossom Guardian

"I am afraid you will not want me." Wei Zhao was telling the truth. A life of drifting had left him somewhat uneasy.

"Actually... what I said just now was from the bottom of my heart!" Tang Yun hesitated for a moment, then said with determination: "I am the kind of girl who stays true to one man to the end. If you do not want me, I will never let another man touch me!"

Tang Yun was referring to the earlier matter of going to a hotel with Wei Zhao, and she was sure he would understand.

Wei Zhao nodded and took Tang Yun's hand. He understood her feelings — in truth, he had known them all along.

As Wei Zhao took her hand, Tang Yun felt her heart ease, and a faint smile appeared at the corners of her mouth as she walked with him toward the school gate.

In the past, holding hands with a boy had seemed to Tang Yun an outrageous thing, but now, she felt blissfully happy.

Today Wei Zhao was still driving Shen Yushu's Beetle. Gu Mengyao's Audi S5 was a bit too flashy — if Wei Zhao drove it to the hospital entrance to pick up Tang Yun every day, it would probably draw a crowd.

The Beetle, however, was far more low-key, and being smaller, it was well suited for Wei Zhao to weave quickly through traffic jams.

At this hour there were not too many cars on the road, and the drive was basically smooth, though there were a fair number of traffic lights. Most of the travel time was spent waiting at signals.

"Hey, brother, want to try something exciting?" Wei Zhao had stopped the car at an intersection with a particularly long signal and was waiting when a man in his twenties with dyed yellow hair sidled up!

Because the weather was hot, Wei Zhao had the window open, so the man could easily talk to him!

Wei Zhao glanced at him and said nothing, waiting for him to continue.

"Underground bare-knuckle fights — ever tried them? Very exciting, all real live combat, and you can bet on the outcome. Interested?" The yellow-haired man rattled on, pitching to Wei Zhao.

"Not interested." After hearing the yellow-haired man out, Wei Zhao gave a faint shake of his head.

Underground bare-knuckle fights? Those were places for bored rich people or underworld bosses. Wei Zhao himself stepped into the ring every few days for real live combat — how could he possibly be interested in some underground fight club?

"Oh... here is our card. If you are interested, you can call the number on it!" Seeing that Wei Zhao was not interested, the yellow-haired man handed him a card, then turned to look for his next target!

Wei Zhao glanced at the card. It was nothing but some "thrilling" promotional slogans, with only a phone number left — no detailed address at all. After reading it, he was about to toss it away when Tang Yun stopped him: "What is that? Let me see? What is an underground bare-knuckle fight?"

Wei Zhao handed the card to Tang Yun and said: "It is just privately organized boxing matches, but generally there are no rules. The only rule is to beat your opponent until he cannot get up, so deaths and injuries are common."

Wei Zhao had once taken part in an underground fight match himself — it had been a mission, though there was no real challenge to it. In those underground fight clubs there were not many skilled fighters; to someone of Wei Zhao's caliber, they were all instant knockouts.

"Ah? Is that not illegal?" Tang Yun said in surprise.

"Heh, it was illegal to begin with." Wei Zhao nodded.

"Oh... then how do they make money?" Tang Yun did not really understand these things.

"Ticket sales alone bring in a hefty income, and the organizers can act as bookmakers, letting the audience bet on which fighter will win, how many rounds it will take, and so on. It is a very profitable business!" Wei Zhao explained.

"Oh... then by handing out these cards on the street so casually, are they not easily discovered?" Tang Yun had no interest in violent things and casually tossed the card into the car's storage compartment.

"These people are all professional advertisers, a completely different group from the actual organizers of the underground fights!" As he spoke, Wei Zhao pointed at the yellow-haired man who had given him the card earlier: "These people hand out ads every day and have sharp eyes. Look — he specifically targets young people driving fairly nice private cars. Many of them are rich second-generation kids from well-off families, and they are exactly the audience for underground fights."

Wei Zhao was fairly familiar with this line of work. These card distributors did not only hand out this one kind of illegal card — they also passed out cards for loan sharks, revenge companies, and the like. If a person were not sharp, they would have been arrested long ago!

But then again, even if they were arrested, the police could not get anything crucial out of them, because these people were all hired hands. They were only paid to distribute ads and had no other connection to the people behind the scenes!

"Oh... how terrifying!" Tang Yun nodded, then suddenly asked: "How do you know so much? Have you been to an underground fight?"

"No... I have fought in one." Wei Zhao shrugged.

"You... fought?" Tang Yun was startled and instinctively wanted to ask Wei Zhao why he would do something so dangerous, but then she thought of his strength and realized it probably was not a problem. Still, Wei Zhao's past seemed very complicated...

Sometimes Tang Yun dearly wanted to know about Wei Zhao's past, but since he did not speak of it, she could not bring herself to ask. She felt he must be a man with a story. But no matter what Wei Zhao had been like before, good or bad, since Tang Yun had set her heart on him, she would accept all of him!

"Heh, it is all in the past. When things quiet down, I will tell you about my past!" Wei Zhao had no intention of hiding his past from Tang Yun, but it had been too dangerous, and he feared she might not be able to take it all at once, so he planned to let it seep in slowly.

"Oh... all right!" Tang Yun nodded happily.

Wei Zhao drove Tang Yun to the parking lot of the Pengzhan Business Hotel, then took the elevator straight up to the twelfth floor and arrived at the door of Room 1209.

Wei Zhao was about to knock when Tang Yun's heart suddenly tightened. The hand she used to hold him had grown faintly damp with sweat. It was impossible not to be nervous! Even though she firmly believed that the love between her and Wei Zhao would surely blossom and bear fruit!

"Do not worry, I am here." Wei Zhao squeezed Tang Yun's hand to reassure her.

Tang Yun nodded, smiled faintly, and felt courage fill her heart once more.

Wei Zhao knocked on the door, and before long, Feng Tianlong's voice came from inside the room: "Who is it?"

"It is me, Wei Zhao." Wei Zhao said.

The door opened. When Feng Tianlong saw Wei Zhao and Tang Yun, he smiled and said warmly: "Wei Zhao, Tang Yun, welcome! Please come in!"
