Chapter 1968 — Why Is That, Then?
"Heh, thanks," Wei Zhao said.
"Don't mention it. You're the one who cured my headaches—I should be thanking you. When is it?" Xu Shilan said.
"Hold on, let me ask." Wei Zhao turned to Bai Weituo. "When is the freshman gala?"
"The night after tomorrow!" Bai Weituo answered instinctively.
"The night after tomorrow," Wei Zhao told Xu Shilan.
"Where? Songshan City?" Xu Shilan noted the time and asked.
"No, I'm in Donghai City right now—Donghai Engineering University," Wei Zhao said.
"Got it. I'll come over tomorrow. Will you pick me up at the airport?" Xu Shilan asked.
"Sure, I'll pick you up." Since he was asking a favor, Wei Zhao did not mind playing chauffeur for once. He assumed Xu Shilan was coming privately for the event, so no organizer would have arranged a car for her.
"Then I'll see you tomorrow..." Xu Shilan said.
But just as she spoke, Sister Wang's voice came from her end: "Xiaohan, weren't we supposed to shoot the cover photos for your new album tomorrow?"
"Oh, we can shoot them in a few days..." Xu Shilan said carelessly...
"You have something to do?" Wei Zhao asked after hearing that.
"It's nothing. I've canceled it," Xu Shilan said.
"Good grief, then I really am flattered. I must have quite some face," Wei Zhao joked.
"So you finally know you have a lot of face? I thought you had no idea!" Xu Shilan snorted and hung up.
Wei Zhao shook his head helplessly, but when he looked up, he saw the three idiots in his dorm staring at him blankly, eyes full of disbelief...
"Brother Wei, do you really know Xu Shilan?" Bai Weituo asked, sounding incredulous.
"I do. She agreed," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
"No way?" Bai Weituo pinched his own cheek hard. "Am I dreaming? Brother Wei, you're amazing—what a feeling, snatching victory from defeat!"
Bai Weituo did not doubt the call at all, because in his view Wei Zhao had no reason to lie; if he said he had called Xu Shilan, then he had called her. Bai Weituo was simply astonished that Wei Zhao actually knew Xu Shilan and seemed quite familiar with her.
"Heh, shouldn't we be getting to class?" Wei Zhao said. "I asked for leave, so I'm fine, but you three—if you skip class, I doubt Instructor Bai will let you off easily, will he?"
"Shit, class?" Bai Weituo checked his watch, hurriedly threw on his coat, and ran out of the dorm...
When they reached the classroom, Wei Zhao saw Han Jingyi sitting beside Wang Xinyan, whispering something to her. That made Wei Zhao frown. Over the past few days he had grown used to sharing a desk with Wang Xinyan; now that Han Jingyi had taken the seat, he felt a little out of place.
But when Han Jingyi saw Wei Zhao, she stood up on her own and moved to a seat in the back, leaving the spot for him—which surprised Wei Zhao somewhat.
Seeing Han Jingyi's move, Wang Xinyan's face flushed slightly. It was too obvious; anyone could tell that her relationship with Wei Zhao was out of the ordinary. Otherwise, in a class with only two girls, sitting together would have been the natural thing.
Wei Zhao did not care about all that. He sat down beside Wang Xinyan. "Is your cold better?"
"Mm, much better." Thinking of the ambiguous scene in the car yesterday, Wang Xinyan blushed even redder.
"Brother Wei Zhao, didn't you take today off? Why did you come anyway? If I'd known you were coming to school today, I'd have hitched a ride with you..." Han Jingyi, sitting behind Wei Zhao, said to him.
How did she know he had taken leave? Then he remembered telling Bai Weituo yesterday that he might not come today and asking him to request leave on his behalf. She must have heard it from Bai Weituo yesterday—or perhaps Wang Xinyan had told her yesterday afternoon.
"Don't you have your own car?" Wei Zhao countered. "You already know which classroom we're in, so why would you need a ride?"
"Aren't we supposed to save energy and cut emissions now? I don't drive; riding with you protects the environment!" Han Jingyi said as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Walking would be even more environmentally friendly," Wei Zhao said, at a loss for words.
"Why would I walk when I can get a ride? Isn't that stupid?" Han Jingyi asked, looking astonished.
"Why not? You wouldn't spend an extra cent on gas—we're going the same way anyway." Han Jingyi looked at Wei Zhao strangely.
"But why should I give you a ride? By your logic, could you let me live in your villa?" Wei Zhao was getting a headache from Han Jingyi's way of thinking.
"Because we're neighbors and classmates. You want to stay in my villa? Sure—I'll clear out a room for you tonight. It's actually kind of scary with just me and my little brother." Han Jingyi said.
"Fine, keep hitching rides. Forget the room," Wei Zhao said, defeated. The girl's logic was too bizarre; he felt that arguing with her would only make things more troublesome, and he might end up losing his mind.
Seeing Wei Zhao stumped, Wang Xinyan could not help covering her mouth and giggling. Han Jingyi really was amusing, and even her questions were cute.
A trace of triumphant satisfaction flickered at the corner of Han Jingyi's mouth, while Wei Zhao fell silent—because Instructor Bai had arrived...
As Instructor Bai had said, he taught most of the pharmaceutical major's courses himself on a part-time basis.
Wei Zhao's medical skills, cultivated by Old Master Wei since childhood, were already top-notch, but to his surprise, some of Instructor Bai's theories gave him a refreshingly new perspective.
They were merely the most elementary pharmacological concepts, yet they inspired Wei Zhao greatly! He glanced sideways at You Panhu and saw that his two hangers-on were idling about, while You Panhu was listening intently to Instructor Bai's explanation.
This discovery also proved that Instructor Bai was no ordinary man!
