Chapter 18 — The Boy of the Ruins Is No Good Sort

The Herdsman of the Wasteland Page 1 of 2

All at once Shen Mu's vision plunged into darkness, and when his consciousness revived, he discovered with horror that it was inside the stone statue! "What happened?" He opened his eyes and tried to move his eyeballs, only to find that "his" eyeballs could move; then he tilted his head and found that his consciousness had a head. He looked down and saw that his consciousness had merged with the "stone statue" -- the statue's hands and feet had become his hands and feet! Consciousness should have no physical form, yet now his consciousness had a body; it was too strange! He felt that this "stone statue" was a kind of spirit, like energy yet not energy, like a soul yet not a soul, bizarre beyond easy explanation. "Primordial-Fetus Divine Treasury, Primordial-Fetus Divine Treasury ... Could the stone statue be my spirit fetus, and only because my consciousness entered it did the spirit fetus awaken? Is this what the Primordial-Fetus Divine Treasury means?" Shen Mu's spirit fetus blinked its eyes, and in an instant understood many things. The human body contains seven divine treasuries, and the Primordial-Fetus Divine Treasury is the first of them. But this divine treasury is sealed; ordinary people cannot open it, and so naturally cannot awaken their spirit fetus. A spirit body's divine treasury, by contrast, is naturally open, so one only needs the corresponding spirit blood, and with that spirit blood one can guide consciousness into the spirit fetus and awaken it. The spirit fetus -- this is what the spirit fetus is: the vessel that holds consciousness. And the divine treasury -- was it not that the gods gave humanity the spirit fetus? Or was it rather that the gods deliberately sealed the spirit fetus away? Just as this thought came to him, primordial qi suddenly surged in from outside and entered the sea of light, wisp after wisp, strand after strand, drawn into the little spirit fetus's body; threads of primordial qi passed in and out through its nostrils, a sensation of great comfort. And with every breath the spirit fetus took, his primordial qi became far purer! Not only that: Shen Mu also found the spirit fetus absorbing the golden light of the sea of light. The golden light passed in and out of his body together with the primordial qi, little flecks of gold adorning the qi; he had no idea what it did. He tried to make the spirit fetus stand, but the tiny infant could not rise, could not even shift its body. "How does a spirit fetus move? Hmm, I'll ask the village headman and Granny and the others when I get back." As he was thinking this, his consciousness suddenly returned to his body, and he opened his eyes. Violent coughing came from the temple. The monster was not dead; it was lying prostrate before the Buddha, coughing blood, spitting it out in great gushes. Shen Mu thought for a moment and stepped through the temple gate. When the monster saw him actually enter the ancient temple, it did not know whether to be afraid or glad, and hastily struggled to rise. Walking toward it, Shen Mu intoned: "Qike Duo Suomoye, Bo Re Bo Re Suomoye, Qike Duo Bo Re Suomoye!" "Wicked creature, how dare you still make a scene!" The monster shuddered with fear. Behind it, the golden Buddha began to shake again, blazing with golden light; the chains clanked loudly, dragging it back down to kneel prostrate! "Om mani padme hum!" A mighty Buddha voice resounded, and the monster was refined until it vomited blood, limp and drained. Shen Mu stopped chanting the demonic incantation, and the golden Buddha's chant sounded only once before it too fell silent. Under the Buddha image, the monster panted heavily. As it was about to rise, the demonic incantation came from Shen Mu's mouth once more. The monster shrieked and hurriedly hid behind the Buddha, only to find that Shen Mu had let out only a syllable or two before stopping. "You are the demon..." The monster cautiously peered out, staring in panic at Shen Mu entering the main hall, and said in a hoarse voice, "You are the demon! You are the great, vicious devil!" Shen Mu made no reply. He went straight to the Buddha image, hesitated a moment, then finally decided to follow the advice of that old hand, the blind old man, and said respectfully, "This humble scholar has been frail since childhood, with deficient kidneys and primordial yang leaking prematurely..." Hearing this, the monster rolled its eyes round and, coughing blood, sputtered with laughter: "Young fellow, you tell the Buddha image about kidney deficiency? The Buddha image is not going to drain your essence!" Shen Mu glared at it: "Qike Duo Suomoye..." The Buddha image quaked: "Wicked creature!" The monster was scared out of its wits and hastily begged for mercy: "Stop chanting! Spare me!" Shen Mu stopped reciting, but the golden Buddha still intoned one true mantra, refining the monster until it vomited blood. Shen Mu made a circuit of the place and found no valuables, but the mountain of white bones piled behind the Buddha startled him; obviously, countless numbers of people had died in this ruined temple, killed by this monster. The youth could not help shaking his head. "You hid the white bones behind the Buddha. The Buddha image has become your accomplice, helping you cover up your crimes so that more people are deceived. If I used the Buddha's hand to refine you to death, it would only become the Buddha's merit, and I will not do that. Demon, what treasures do you have in this temple?" Trembling, the monster said, "What treasures would I have? I was pinned down here by that bald thief, and he looted all my treasures away." "Qike Duo..." "Don't chant!" The monster put on an ingratiating smile. "All these years I have run my affairs here. Apart from an occasional feast for my appetite, I did manage to scrounge up a few good things. Take them." Saying this, it forced itself up and crawled unsteadily to the top of the main hall, poked about gently, and opened a movable hidden panel in the hall. The contents of the panel tumbled down with a clatter: weapons, armor, and things of that sort, and besides these, several pieces of clothing, mostly women's bellybands, though judging by the material they were the sort only wealthy families could wear. "That is all there is," the monster said with an ingratiating smile. Shen Mu frowned and said with disappointment, "Only this? No miraculous elixirs or the like?" "If there were any elixirs, I ate them." The monster stretched its centipede-like body, joints cracking, and chuckled: "I have been shut up here too long. There is nothing I would not eat. Elixirs taste even better than these people do -- how could I let them go? Do not underestimate these weapons. They are fine goods. These weapons are treasures born only within the Six-Expanse Divine Treasury; from birth they are nourished by their own primordial qi, and their power is terrifying. They are called Primordial Weapons!" Shen Mu was dubious. He reached down and picked up a Roc-Plume Blade. It was shockingly heavy and solid in his hand, far heavier and solider than the Butcher's Blade on his back. But strangely, the Butcher's Blade was much larger than this seemingly ordinary weapon, and yet weighed less. The Roc-Plume was long and narrow; the Butcher's Blade was broad and thick. Shen Mu drew the Butcher's Blade and clinked it lightly against the Roc-Plume. There was a clang, and the Roc-Plume snapped at the waist, its tip falling to the ground. The monster stared round-eyed, gaping at the Butcher's Blade in his hand, unable to speak. Deeply disappointed, Shen Mu tossed the Roc-Plume aside. "That chopping-board blade of yours -- who forged it?" The monster shrieked and stammered, "A Primordial Weapon nourished by a master of the Six Harmonies Realm snapped at a single touch! A chopping-board blade like that could absolutely never have been forged by an ordinary man!" Shen Mu stroked the Butcher's Blade. The blade was cold; a chill went straight into his
