Chapter 147 — The Long-Awaited...
Years of Heartflutter Page 249 of 501
"Then Lin Yanhe has one too, right?" Girls always had a competitive streak. Though Chen Shutang had accepted Lin Yanhe magnanimously, deep down she still hoped Yang Ce would lean a little more toward her.
"No, she doesn't know how to drive yet. I just bought one for you. If you have time, how about you teach her to drive?" Yang Ce had more or less guessed what Chen Shutang was thinking, so he said with a smile.
"Okay, sure. Oh, I'd better go—my parents are calling me for dinner. I'll call you tonight." Mother Chen's voice came from the other end, and after a few hurried words Chen Shutang hung up.
After calling Chen Shutang, Yang Ce called Lin Yanhe as well. Unexpectedly, Lin Yanhe was still at the office at this hour.
"Why aren't you home yet? Look at the time." Yang Moyi said, half reproachfully. "Even for work, you can't run yourself into the ground."
"I—I'll just sort out the company's accounts and then head back," Lin Yanhe said hesitantly.
"Have you eaten?" Yang Yanchuan asked.
"Not yet. I'll go home and eat once I'm done. My mom saves me food every day," Lin Yanhe said.
"Every day? Don't tell me you've been working late at the office every day lately?" Yang Ce was alarmed. "How much work can there possibly be to handle?"
"I—" After that one word, Lin Yanhe fell silent. Yang Ce could even picture her—biting her lip, looking terribly aggrieved.
"All right, you wait for me. I'm coming to the office now," Yang Yanzhou said.
"You—don't come! I'm leaving right away!" Lin Yanhe said in alarm, stumbling over her words.
"What's wrong?" Yang Moyi asked, a little puzzled.
"I—it's nothing. Anyway, don't come over first," Lin Yanhe said, becoming utterly flustered at the news that Yang Ce was coming.
"Oh, all right then." That was what Yang Ce said, but doubt had taken root in his mind. What on earth was going on with Lin Yanhe? Why was she so panicked at the mere mention of him visiting the office? Could she have done something shameful—or something that let him down?
At that thought, Yang Juehuan's heart jolted. But no, that didn't seem possible. With Lin Yanhe's temperament, she would never do anything to betray him—in matters of the heart, it had been clear from the very beginning that Lin Yanhe was stubborn but utterly constant. As for other matters, the company was his in the first place, so there was even less chance of Lin Yanhe doing anything to harm it. Then what was Lin Yanhe doing right now—what was she trying to hide from him?
To be continued.
890. Miss Lin's Thoughts
Now that doubt had taken root, Yang Duoran was eager to hurry to the company and find out what was really going on. But as he passed the Mr. Lee's California Beef Noodle King below the office building, it occurred to him that Lin Yanhe had not eaten yet, so he went in and ordered two bowls of beef noodles and a few side dishes, carried them into the building, and headed upstairs.
The company's security guards all knew Yang Ce. One of them hurried forward to greet him, but Yang Ce waved him off and asked in a low voice, "Is Vice President Lin still in the office?"
"Yes, she is." The guard also lowered his voice, though he had no idea why Yang Ce was whispering; since Yang Ce whispered, he whispered too.
"Has she been staying late every night these past few days?" Yang Yanchuan asked.
"Yes, she leaves after nine every night," the guard answered with a nod.
"Alone?" The moment Yang Yanchuan finished asking, he felt the question was pointless. He had no reason to doubt Lin Yanhe's character. Besides, even if she were seeing another man, she would never choose the office for a rendezvous. And Lin Yanhe was not that sort of person anyway.
Still, after what had happened with Sun Jie and Xiao Qing, Yang Ce could not help thinking something rather wicked: could Lin have the same taste, and be carrying on a lesbian romance with some female employee? And it would be best if the other party were Chen Shutang—that would be just perfect. Of course, it was obviously impossible; Yang Shuoxuan was merely indulging in a bit of idle fantasy.
It seemed Lin Yanhe was probably doing something she did not want him to know about, something that mattered a great deal to her.
"Yes. Vice President Zhao always leaves first, and the other staff all go at about the same time," the guard answered honestly.
"All right, then. Carry on with your rounds. Thank you for your hard work—the company's safety is in your hands," Yang Ce said with a smile, clapping the guard on the shoulder.
The guard nodded, visibly moved. Sometimes a single word of concern was enough to make them feel that their post had meaning, that they had not been overlooked.
Yang Ce tiptoed upstairs and made his way to the door of Lin Yanhe's vice president's office.
The space had originally been one large open room; the manager's office and the conference room had been partitioned off afterward, and the partitions were not walls but glass, which made it easy for the general manager to keep an eye on the staff at any time.
So Yang Ce could see straight into the room from where he stood. In fact, even if the partitions had not been glass, seeing through them would have been no great feat for someone of Yang Juehuan's abilities.
He saw Lin Yanhe sitting at her desk with her head bent, a thick stack of books piled in front of her and a notebook open before her, in which she was at that moment writing something.
Yang Wenru frowned. Could a small jewelry company really have so much to deal with every day that she had to stay after hours to finish it? But then why hadn't Zhao Sisi and the other employees stayed behind with her?
Surely they had not seen that Lin Yanhe was easy to push around and dumped all the work on her? Though on reflection that seemed unlikely. First, Zhao Sisi would never do such a thing; second, even if there were work, it would be assigned to the staff below—there was no need for Lin Yanhe to slave away at it herself.
Yang Ce carefully slid the glass door open, tiptoed in with the beef noodles, and came to a stop in front of Lin Yanhe. Making no sound at all was the easiest thing in the world for Yang Ce, a professional killer.
Then again, it was also possible that Lin Yanhe was simply too absorbed. Yang Ce had done his best not to make a sound, but as he walked he blocked the light of the fluorescent lamp, shifting the light and shadow in the room. If Lin Yanhe had been paying attention, she would surely have noticed—yet she felt nothing at all.
"Zhiyun," Yang Ce said softly, bending down to whisper by Lin Yanhe's ear.
"Ah!" Lin Yanhe started, and the pen in her hand slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the desk. "Yang Ce—what are you doing here?"
Only after she said it did Lin Yanhe remember what she had just written on the desk. Flustered, she shut the notebook and began hastily gathering up the things on the table.
"What were you writing?" In fact, while standing behind Lin Yanhe a moment ago, Yang Ce had already glimpsed roughly what was in the notebook.
"N-nothing," Lin Yanhe said, blushing and somewhat flustered.
"Heh. Actually, you don't have to tell me—I already saw it." Yang Hengye reached over and took the notebook Lin Yanhe was trying to hide. Frustrated and embarrassed, she hung her head and did not try to stop Yang Juehuan, only sitting foolishly in her chair.
Yang Ce gently opened the notebook and began reading from the first page. What was written there all had to do with the company's operations, and very detailed it was—like a diary. Every day she had carefully recorded what people had said.
Naturally, what Lin Yanhe had recorded were the remarks in which others offered constructive opinions and important suggestions for the company.
"Zhiyun, what's the meaning of writing all this down?" Yang Mo was puzzled; he could not imagine why Lin Yanhe would record such things every day.
